For Xmas, my parents handed me down an old print from my grandparents’ house that had always haunted me— “The Last Guest” by Charles Gibson. It turns out this particular print is from an 1896 edition of only 500 ever. The linework was a huge influence on me, and the tone and supernatural content set the stage for a lot of my work as well. You can find the print scribbled above Memaw’s couch in Swallow Me Whole, when she sleeps for the last time cradling a photo of her late husband.

natepowell:

Essential Team March ice cream break at the MSU Dairy Store for Andrew’s birfday. East Lansing MI, August 2014.

Happy birthday to March co-author Andrew Aydin! He spent it with the team, speaking about their graphic novel to over-capacity crowds* at Michigan State University (including 8,000 freshmen who’d all been assigned to read it) yesterday, but it’s good to see they took a moment to relax and celebrate as well.

*Nate Powell says: “the event was so overpacked that, since the mayor and fire marshal were both there anyway, fire code was thrown by the wayside to allow for as many folks as possible. We found out later that an additional 300 people had to be turned away at the door! Wild. Go comics.”

americancomicon:

Absolutely amazing story of one of the central battles of the civil rights movement, including information on the history of Gandhian tactics, issued by the Fellowship for Reconciliation.

It’s great to see this nearly-lost piece of American history (which also happens to be comics history) back in the public eye. Grab the digital version instantly, or if you want physical copies, we’ve got those too!

In any case, all proceeds go to the Fellowship of Reconciliation, who produced this comic in 1957-58 and still continue their work over 50 years later.

kochalka:

The events I use to tell the stories are very deliberately chosen, so in a way the comics are by default very much filtered, or edited, even though I never want to compromise what I’m trying to say by having some kind of rule about what I can or can’t write about.”

- Jeffrey Brown discussing his autobiographical comics work in general and his newest book, A Matter of Life, in my Robot 6 interview with him.
